Overview

The complete guide to fencing from Quest Exteriors.

Fences earn their wear. Between summer heat that bakes wood, soils that shift, wind events that test post depth, and the HOA color and height rules that govern every detail, building a fence that lasts takes more than a weekend and a load of cedar pickets. Quest Exteriors has been doing fence installation homeowners trust for thirty-plus years, plus wood fence repair, custom gates, staining and sealing, and full custom pergola work across our service area.

Cedar is the residential workhorse. Aromatic Western Red Cedar resists rot and insects naturally, weathers to a soft silver-gray, and tolerates humidity better than most pine alternatives. We install standard 6-foot cedar privacy fences with steel posts (the longest-lasting residential build), 8-foot cedar privacy fences for properties that need taller screening, board-on-board cedar fencing for tighter privacy and a more dimensional look, horizontal-slat modern cedar fences in 1x4, 1x6, or mixed widths, custom gates with self-closing hardware and drop rods, and pressure-treated pine fences when budget is the driving constraint.

For longevity, we set posts in concrete to depths that meet local code (typically 30-36 inches), use galvanized fasteners, and back-rail at 36-inch maximum spacing. The single biggest variable in cedar fence lifespan is post quality — Quest Exteriors uses steel posts coated for corrosion resistance, not undersized wood posts that will rot at the soil line and fail in 8-12 years. The difference in materials cost is modest. The difference in lifespan is substantial.

We do plenty of wood fence repair across our service area. Common service calls include re-setting leaning posts after wind events or saturated soil, replacing rotted pickets and rails on otherwise sound runs, rebuilding gates that have sagged or had hardware fail, re-staining and re-sealing fences that have grayed prematurely or developed mildew, and section replacement after vehicle impact, fallen trees, or severe storm damage. If you're searching wood fence repair after a storm, your fence may qualify for an insurance claim — our team can document the damage and assist with the carrier, same process we use for roof and siding claims.

A well-built pergola turns a backyard into a usable outdoor room. We design and install custom pergolas in cedar, treated pine, and aluminum — freestanding or attached — with optional roof systems for actual rain shelter. Custom pergola work from Quest Exteriors includes site assessment with foundation type (concrete piers vs. anchored posts) and code-compliant load design; HOA submission packages where required; beam, rafter, and purlin sizing for span and wind load; optional features (louvered tops, polycarbonate or fabric covers, integrated lighting, ceiling fans, outdoor kitchen pads); and stain and sealant systems for cedar and exposed-grain timber.

We do not install bargain-grade prefab pergolas. The reason is simple: wind events test connections, and undersized brackets and small-section lumber fail. Our builds are engineered to outlast the warranty period rather than meet a price point. When you compare bids for a pergola build, ask for beam and post sizing on the written estimate — the cheapest quote almost always uses smaller members than the job actually calls for.

Fresh cedar should be sealed within the first year — ideally after the moisture content has stabilized but before UV breakdown begins. Quest Exteriors offers full staining and sealing service using semi-transparent and solid-body products from Sherwin-Williams, Sikkens, and Behr ProLuxe. We pressure-wash, allow proper drying time, and apply with sprayers back-brushed for penetration. Done right, a stain coat extends the life of a cedar fence by 5-7 years and dramatically reduces ongoing maintenance.

Property owners hire us because we deliver more than pickets and posts. We handle HOA approvals, coordinate with neighbors on shared fence lines, design gates that close cleanly for years (not weeks), and back our work with a workmanship warranty on top of material coverage. Whether you need a privacy fence, a custom modern pergola, or storm-damage repair after a severe weather event, we'll show up when we said we would and finish what we started.

From the first inspection to the final walk, our fence installation process runs four steps: free on-site measurement and consultation, written estimate with line-item materials and labor, professional installation by skilled trade crews, and a final walkthrough where we confirm gate operation, post integrity, and finish quality. Most residential fences install in 1-3 days depending on length and complexity; commercial and HOA-scale projects scale on the schedule we agree to up front.

Our services are available across our 23-state coverage area. Contact us to confirm availability in your region.
